Love is a Story is Benji Kay. More specifically, Love is a Story is an Electronic/Pop band based in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Before I go any further, I have to admit that when October first sent me the assignment to do a feature on Love is a Story, I was kind of skeptical. "Oh, okay, here we go," I thought. "Another cookie-cutter, electro-pop MySpace band with a legion of scene-kid fans who is more focused on friend count than music and is trying to be the next Jeffree Star." I was so, so wrong.
Love is a Story has a very unique sound. Sure, it's electronic, it's pop, it's MySpace-y...but it's also very musical. First of all, Benji has a great voice. But on top of his great singing, he adds a lot of synth effects to give it a more electro-pop feel. He has a wide range of influences, from hellogoodbye, Blink-182, The Rocket Summer, Regina Spektor, Say Anything and many more. Out of the six songs posted on his MySpace, and admittedly the only ones I've heard, my personal favorite is "Take Control." Coincidentally, "Take Control" was recently featured on MTV's Real World: Brooklyn, about 13 minutes into the episode. If you didn't catch it, you can check it out here. In addition to his six MySpace tracks, the debut album The Science Of Sound features four more songs. It can be purchased on iTunes or Amazon MP3. (Psst…if you’re a bit strapped for cash, Amazon is about two bucks cheaper.)
If you’re reading this from anywhere near Oklahoma City, shoot on over to the Quail Springs Mall on Friday, May 22nd. Why, you ask? At 7pm, Love is a Story will be playing a free show, and be having a meet and greet at Hot Topic. If it didn’t require paying for a plane ticket and a hotel room, I would so be there.
